Maria Beard

Research Assistant

Maria is a children’s nurse who throughout her clinical career has gained experience working across medical, surgical and emergency care specialities. She continues to hold a clinical position in the Children’s Emergency Department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Maria’s main interest is the prevention of childhood burn injuries in low-middle income countries. In 2018 Maria completed her PhD entitled “An exploration of the factors associated with paediatric burn injuries in rural and peri-urban Malawi”. The study employed a qualitative approach to uncover parental, health professional and key stakeholder perceptions of burn injury risks and their prevention across four Malawian communities.  As result of this work Maria has participated in the development of the Basic Burns Care training programme for primary-level health care workers in resource limited settings, organised by Interburns and the Centre for Global Burn Injury Policy and Research (CGBIPR). Maria has also been invited to share her research findings at international conferences and workshops held in the UK, Finland, Bangkok and Malawi.

Following the completion of her PhD Maria was involved in a research project based in Tanzania which used qualitative methods to explore the use of alternative household energy sources.

Maria currently works as a Lecturer in Children’s and Young Peoples Nursing at the University of Nottingham. As part of this role Maria supports students and delivers teaching on pre-and post-registration nursing programmes.

Maria has recently joined the team at the CGBIPR to assist with the design, delivery and evaluation of an implementation and improvement science short course for nurses working in resource poor areas.
