Tom Potokar is a Professor at the CGBIPR at Swansea University , Director of Interburns and worked for 14 years as a consultant Burns and Plastic Surgeon at the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery. He has been working in the international field since 1990, initially with MSF, and subsequently through clinical training in South Africa, UK and New Zealand. Since setting up Interburns in 2006 he has worked in many countries in Asia and Africa, developing and delivering training programs and supporting capacity building as well as working at Ministry Of Health level on national policy and strategy. He contributed to the WHO 5 Year Plan for Burn Care and Prevention, and is Lead for Education and Capacity Building of the WHO Global Alliance for Care of the Injured as well as an active member of the WHO Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care. He has over 40 publications including several book chapters and has presented at numerous national and international meetings and is a regular reviewer for a number of burns journals. His main interest is in the field of implementation science and systems thinking for improving global burn care and prevention.
Tom was awarded an OBE in the 2016/7 New Year’s Honours list for services to global burn care and prevention.
